The 49ers signed linebacker Michael Wilhoite to the practice squad Wednesday, releasing running back Ian Johnson from the unit.
Wilhoite (6-0, 240) signed with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL as an undrafted free agent in 2011.
A 25-year old native from Topeka, KS, Wilhoite starred collegiately at Washburn University. He played in 44 games (35 starts), registered 211 tackles and three interceptions, and was named honorable mention All-MIAA, as a senior.

Johnson was signed to the 49ers practice on Sept. 13, 2011.
