San Francisco 49ers of the past will take a more active role in taking care of their own in the future.
Members of the 49ers alumni have announced the formation of the Golden Heart Fund, an organization created to serve former 49ers players who are in need of financial, medical, psychological or emotional support.
The board of the organization includes former 49ers players Ronnie Lott, Harris Barton, Brent Jones and Ron Ferrari. Keena Turner, the 49ers’ vice president of football affairs, and current 49ers players will attend a press conference on Wednesday at Levi's Stadium to unveil the Golden Heart Fund.

Last week, former 49ers defensive lineman Larry Roberts passed away after numerous health issues, including the amputation of both legs. He was 53.
In other 49ers-related charitable endeavors, the club has joined the Warriors and Raiders in donating $50,000 to the needs of those impacted by the Oakland warehouse fire, which resulted in 36 deaths on Dec. 2.
