SANTA CLARA – Defensive lineman Arik Armstead underwent shoulder surgery on Tuesday morning, a week after the 49ers placed the second-year player on season-ending injured reserve.

His surgery took place on his 23rd birthday.

Armstead posted an early morning photo on Instagram as he prepared for surgery. He is expected to ready for the start of the 49ers’ offseason program in April, according to a source.

The surgery was to repair a left shoulder that had experienced repeated subluxations, beginning in training camp. Armstead did not play in any of the 49ers’ four exhibition games. He left games early due to the injury on Oct. 23 against Tampa Bay and Nov. 6 against New Orleans before being placed on injured reserve.

Armstead was the 49ers’ first-round draft pick in 2016. He was chosen with the No. 17 overall pick. Armstead had 21 tackles in eight games with 2.5 sacks. He started the final four games in which he appeared.
