49ers don't blame short week, Packers letdown for embarrassing loss to Rams

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers shot themselves in the foot again Sunday and lost in embarrassing fashion to the Los Angeles Rams.

Losing the turnover battle has been the 49ers' theme for the past few games. But their 39-10 loss Sunday to the Rams at Levi's Stadium was the first time this season that a defeat could be described as humiliating.

“It’s always embarrassing when you lose like that,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “You know, we got pride and we’re confident in what we do. We’re not proud of our record right now. We’re definitely not proud of today. When we play better, we still feel the same way. We’re not into any moral victories here, and we’re as far away from one as we could have been today.”

Quarterback C.J. Beathard was sacked seven times by the Rams' defense and hit 11 times. He had been sacked seven times in the previous three games as the starter.

“We didn’t come prepared, and we got to do a better job next time,” 49ers center Weston Richburg said. “Obviously, it didn’t work today, so we got to go back to the drawing board and make sure we’re better next time."

It could be argued that it was a short week for the 49ers, after their long trip back from a loss in Green Bay on Monday, but no one used that as an excuse. Nobody admitted a letdown from an emotional loss, either.

“I don’t know,” Shanahan said. “Those are definitely the things people will say when something like that happens. I don’t think emotions had to do with our turnovers. When you turn the ball over like that, you can expect those results.”

Richburg said the emotions of a hard-fought loss and a short week weren't factors in the 49ers' ragged performance.

“No,” Richburg said. “It’s part of the league, it’s part of what we got to do, it’s part of our job, so we gotta do it.”

Left tackle Joe Staley added there were no excuses for how the 49ers played Sunday.

“That doesn’t have any bearing on it," Staley said. "Each week is a new week. We’re professionals, and we know how to handle that stuff. We’ve been doing this for a while now. You play short weeks in college and short weeks in the NFL. No excuse there.”

The 49ers will head to Arizona next Sunday to face the Cardinals for the second time this season.
