49ers hope to work out contract extensions

SANTA CLARA -- Cornerback Carlos Rogers expressed this week a desire to play the remainder of his career with the 49ers. And with good things happening, Rogers is undoubtedly not the only player who would like to sign a contract extension to remain with the organization.

With 21 players on the roster whose contracts are scheduled to expire at the end of the season, the topic of locking some of the players into long-term deals is something the 49ers' decision-makers have talked about, too."There are discussions," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said. "(But) nothing that we really talk about specifically."This is our team. These are our guys. (I) hope there are guys who want to come back and continue to be a part of this, as consummate team players this year, next year and into the future. That's a good thing. I think everybody wants to be a Niner. I can understand that. It's a good place to be."Rogers is one of those players. He told CSNBayArea.com this week he wants to sign an extension beyond this season."If we can get something worked out, that would be great," Rogers told CSNBayArea.com on Tuesday. "My agent (Todd France) knows that I like what's going on here. I want to be here. This has been great for me, and I would love to get something worked out for five, six years."Rogers said he did not want to know all the details of any contract talks because he wants to maintain his focus on playing football. But Harbaugh said looking ahead does not bother him. He said he always tries to plan ahead."Personally speaking now, this is just me talking, tha's where I choose to live, is in the future," Harbaugh said "Plan, save, prepare, work, to make a better future. That's where the wheels are turning in guys' minds. I know they are in mine. I think it's a positive thing."Team president Jed York told CSN Bay Area's Mindi Bach last week that Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke have discussed which players to approach about making long-term commitments. Harbaugh stated recently that he informed injured 49ers receiver Joshua Morgan that he wants him back next season.
On the possibility that the 49ers will work out some contract extensions before the end of the season, York said, "There are guys that we've extended. Obviously Frank (Gore) is one of those guys that we extended, so it's not out of the question.
