49ers shut out of initial Pro Bowl roster

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers are in danger of having no players selected for the Pro Bowl for the first time since 2005.

No 49ers were named Tuesday on the initial ballot for the NFL all-star game. However, it is believed the 49ers did have some representatives among the alternates.

The 49ers (1-13) are on a 13-game losing streak entering their penultimate game Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. The New York Jets, New Orleans, Chicago, Jacksonville and NFC North-leading Detroit also had no players selected.

Typically, there is a lot of turnover involving players who were originally named to the Pro Bowl and alternates. The Pro Bowl will take place Sunday, Jan. 29, at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida.

None of the players from the Super Bowl teams appear in the game, and many of the players from teams that lost in their respective conference championship games also opt not to play.

Left tackle Joe Staley is in danger of seeing his streak of five consecutive Pro Bowls come to an end. Staley, who has missed the past two 49ers games with a hamstring injury, is likely an alternate behind NFL tackles Tyron Smith (Dallas), Trent Williams (Washington) and Jason Peters (Philadelphia).

The last time the 49ers did not have any representation in the Pro Bowl was 2005, when the club finished with a 4-12 record. In 2004, when the 49ers finished 2-14, long-snapper Brian Jennings was added as a “need player.”
