SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers waivedinjured tight end Nate Byham on Thursday.

Byham, a sixth-round draft pick of the 49ers in 2010, missed all of last season after sustaining a torn ACL. He took part in the team's offseason conditioning program, and passed the physical at the start of training camp.

However, Byham did not suit up Friday in the 49ers' first exhibition game. He also was not on the practice field for any work this week. If Byham clears waivers, he will revert back to the 49ers on injured reserve. The 49ers now have an opening on their 90-man roster.

Byham appeared in 14 games as a rookie in 2010. He made three starts. He caught five passes for 27 yards.
