The process of building a stadium in Santa Clara for the 49ers took another step forward Tuesday when the Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved a 10 million expenditure to prepare the construction site.

The funds will help transform a parking lot adjacent to the Great America amusement park -- the re-routing of utilities, the addition of an access road, sidewalks and additional parking spaces.

Santa Clara will tap into voter-approved tax revenue for a portion of the project; it reportedly will borrow 6 million from the 49ers for the rest.

"This is really an exciting move, though it doesn't sound like very exciting work to prepare the site and move utilities and parking," said City Councilmember Lisa Gillmor. "It's really a great movement forward for our stadium."

Previously, voters in Santa Clara passed a measure to provide 114 million to build the stadium. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2013 and the facility is targeted to open in 2015.
