Freddie Solomon, 49ers wide receiver from 1978 to 1985 and two-time Super Bowl champ, has died at the age of 59 after a battle with liver and colon cancer in Florida.Former 49ers safety Ronnie Lott told the Tampa Tribune, "Freddie Solomon was a treasure for us in San Francisco. What a humanitarian he has been for the city of Tampa.''Solomon was diagnosed with cancer nine months ago, but his situation deteriorated on Feb. 4, and he was hospitalized.Solomon is survived by his wife Delilah.RELATED: Montana, Lott Clark remember Freddie Solomon
He was originally drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1975 out of the University of Tampa, where he played quarterback. Then Dolphins head coach Don Shula turned Solomon into a return man and wide receiver. Solomon was traded to the 49ers in 1978.Solomon and former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo combined forces to help foster children in the Tampa, Florida area during Christmas time by donating money and toys.DeBartolo: "I've met thousands of players who came through my locker room with the 49ers, but I've never seen anyone with a heart like Freddie."Many 49ers fans may remember that it was Solomon, not Dwight Clark, who was Joe Montana's primary target on "The Catch" play in the 1981 NFC Championship game -- but Solomon slipped on his route, and Montana hit Clark for the game-winner.
Over his career, Solomon played in 151 games, and caught 371 balls for 48 touchdowns. He was an All-Pro selection in 1980.
