How 49ers' regular season prepared them for chaotic Super Bowl week

MIAMI, Fla. -- The 49ers got some practice for Super Bowl week with two week-long trips this season.

The 49ers do not feel as if the week of practice has been a shock to their systems because they have experience practicing away from their Santa Clara facility. Early in the season, the 49ers spent a week at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio, between back-to-back road games in Tampa Bay and Cincinnati. In December, the 49ers worked out in Bradenton, Fla., at the IMG Academy in the week between games at Baltimore and New Orleans.

“It’s been pretty cool because this year there have been two times we went away for the week,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday. “This is our third time we’ve had a trip away for a week as a team. But it’s been really the exact same schedule so the guys are used to it.”

Shanahan said the only thing that is different has been the three hourlong media obligations at night.

But Thursday was the final time the 49ers were available to the media before facing the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV.

On a normal week, the 49ers are available to the media on Friday, too.

“Other than that, we’ve been able to keep the routine the same,” Shanahan said. “Right now, after this, we are exactly on our routine.”

The families of the players and staff are scheduled to arrive in Miami on Thursday night. The 49ers will have their standard practice, focusing on the red zone, on their standard shortened workday on Friday.

The club will have a walk-through on Saturday before playing Sunday in the Super Bowl.
