Maiocco's Top 3 Chiefs-49ers Matchups
Chiefs at 49ers: Top Matchups to Watch
Colin Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) host Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs (2-2) in a Week 5 showdown at Levi's Stadium. Insider Matt Maiocco brings you his top-three matchups that will impact the the outcome of Sunday's game...
Matchup No. 3: Travis Kelce vs. Michael Wilhoite
Kelce will work the middle of the field, which plays into Smith’s strength as a quarterback. Wilhoite earned the right to see more time in coverage after a game in which Zach Ertz caught four passes for 43 yards and Brent Celek had no receptions despite playing 36 snaps. With wide receiver Donnie Avery out for this game, the Chiefs figure to target Kelce even more.
Matchup No. 2: Justin Houston vs. Jonathan Martin
Houston is tied for the NFL lead with five sacks. He is well on his way to a third consecutive season with double-digit sacks. Martin will have a difficult time against the speed-rush of Houston, so he’ll have to do a lot better in the run game on a defender against whom he holds a size advantage.
Matchup No. 1: Alex Smith vs. Colin Kaepernick
Smith was never more popular with 49ers fans than at the time of his departure. The 49ers obviously could not keep high-salaried backup quarterback after Kaepernick had taken over as the starter, so he was dealt to Kansas City. Kaepernick has been very good since replacing Smith in the starting lineup, but he has yet to emerge fully as an elite, consistent passer.
