Mid-day 49ers free agency update

Share

This is a 49ers blog, so we provide this update on the first day of full action from the NCAA Tournament:New Mexico Lobos 75, Long Beach State 49ers 68.OK, now let's move on to football matters . . . Quarterback Alex Smith and the 49ers still have not come together to execute the document on a new contract. But despite the delay, I sense no less certainty from either side that a deal will eventually get done. . . . New York Giants unrestricted free agent Mario Manningham visited the 49ers on Thursday. Chaz Schilens and Brandon Lloyd, separate sources confirmed, came through the building earlier in the week. . . .One receiver who has not gotten much attention -- and somebody I think would be a good pickup for the 49ers -- is Arizona free agent Early Doucet. He caught 54 passes with the Cardinals, and he is not afraid to mix it up. (Remember his tussle with 49ers safety Dashon Goldson?). Doucet's agent is Chafie Fields, a 49ers draft pick from 2000.Here's a status report on some of the top free-agent receivers (2011 catches, yards, touchdowns in parenthesis):Unrestricted
