Recapping a week of 49ers movement

While keeping tabs from afar, there was not a lot of 49ers activity to track in the past week.--The previously reported one-year contract agreement with running back Brandon Jacobs became official. The addition of Jacobs theoretically gives the 49ers another reliable option behind starter Frank Gore.
Jacobs has 56 rushing touchdowns in seven seasons. Gore has 43 touchdowns in the same number of seasons but with about 600 more rushing attempts. On a conference call last week, Jacobs made his case to be the 49ers' short-yardage back.RELATED: Frank Gore career statsBrandon Jacobs career stats
"Well, being 25 or 35 pounds heavier than Frank, I'd hope I'll be the one to get it," Jacobs said. "But Frank has done great in that area the last seven years. He's done great. He has no issue getting in. It's whatever is best for the team."Said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke in a statement, "He has been productive throughout his career, and provides our offense a different dimension. We look forward to incorporating Brandon into our system."The master plan is for Gore and Jacobs to complement each other. Meanwhile, Anthony Dixon has to do a lot of work to keep his spot on the roster.--The 49ers re-signed wide receiver Brett Swain, a non-tendered restricted free agent. As the 49ers try to strengthen the position, Swain faces an uphill battle to win a roster spot.Swain won a mid-season tryout against T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Brian Finneran and Chris Chambers to earn a roster spot. But Swain appeared in just five games, catching two passes for 15 yards. In the NFC championship game, Swain played sparingly as the team opted to use more of Delanie Walker, coming off a fractured jaw, as the No. 2 tight end rather than Swain as the No. 3 wideout.RELATED: Updated 49ers rosterDepth chart
--Safety Reggie Smith, an unrestricted free agent, signed with the Carolina Panthers. Smith was the 49ers' No. 3 safety last season. In his season-ending meeting with Baalke, the sides agreed it was in the best interest of both sides for Smith to look for a better opportunity elsewhere. Currently, C.J. Spillman is the 49ers' third safety behind starters Dashon Goldson and Donte Whitner. The club will look for another veteran safety andor add at the position in the draft.--Veteran safety Madieu Williams took a free-agent visit to the Washington Redskins and does not appear to be much of a priority for the 49ers to re-sign.
--The 49ers had a visit with veteran interior offensive lineman Jason Brown, whom the St. Louis Rams released late last season. The 49ers have also brought in veterans Leonard Davis and Deuce Lutui for visits, too.RELATED: 49ers bring in OL Leonard Davis and Deuce Lutui
The 49ers can be expected to add a veteran and add a youngster, as they look to build solid competition at right guard to replace Adam Snyder, whom the club did not retain. Snyder signed a five-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.
