The 49ers reportedly have competition for free-agent quarterback Brian Hoyer.
The New York Jets are also interested in Hoyer, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
The 49ers’ interest in Hoyer has been expected – especially because the 49ers have no quarterbacks under contract for the 2017 season. Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract last week. The other three quarterbacks who spent time with the club last season – Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder and Thad Lewis -- are scheduled to be unrestricted free agents.

The 49ers could also be interested in signing Atlanta free-agent quarterback Matt Schaub, whether or not the club acquires Hoyer.
In 2014, Hoyer started a career-high 13 games with the Cleveland Browns with new 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan as the offensive coordinator. He completed just 55.3 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Cleveland went 7-6 in Hoyer’s starts.
Hoyer, 31, has made 31 starts in his eight-year NFL career while spending time with New England, Arizona, Cleveland, Houston and Chicago. Last year with the Bears, Hoyer threw six touchdown passes and no interceptions in five starts. His passer rating was 98.0.
NFL teams are allowed to negotiate with the agents of scheduled free-agents for a 52-hour period that began Tuesday at 9 a.m. The official start of the free-agent signing period is Thursday at 1 p.m.
