Sack numbers belie effectiveness of pass rush

The 49ers defense sent Matthew Stafford to the turf five times during the teams 25-19 win and introduced Colt McCoy to the Candlestick grass four times in a 20-10 victory the following week.

But over the two ensuing games, opposing quarterbacks have mostly evaded the takedown. Ahmad Brooks and Patrick Willis have recorded one sack each in the last two games with tackles of John Beck and Eli Manning respectively, and thats it.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio says the defenses sack numbers may be down, but they are not indicative of the effectiveness of the 49ers the pass rush.

I think our rush last week had been basically like it was during most of the season, Fangio said. Eli Manning was a quarterback that was going to get it out quicker. Going back to the Washington game, Washington, if you remember, came off that game where they had nine or ten sacks against them. And anytime that happens its a red alert that thats gotta get fixed.

Fangio noted that Washington addressed that trend by having Beck get the ball out quicker in the game against them than he had in previous games.

Thats one of the reasons that quarterback threw so many check downs in that game, Fangio noted.
