Source: Dial scheduled to visit Packers

Former 49ers defensive tackle Quinton Dial is scheduled to take a free-agent visit to the Green Bay Packers on Monday, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Dial, 27, is a four-year veteran who was not subject to the waiver wire after the 49ers released him on Saturday. He is free to sign with any team at any time.

The 49ers on Sunday claimed former Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Xavier Cooper for the backup role for which Dial was competing.

Dial started 26 of the 29 games in which he appeared for the 49ers over the past two seasons. While appearing in 46 games with the 49ers, Dial recorded 78 tackles and 4.5 sacks.

But he was not considered a good fit for Robert Saleh’s new 4-3 system. He is best-suited as a 3-4, two-gap system. The Packers play a 3-4 system under defensive coordinator Dom Capers.

The Packers on Sunday signed former 49ers outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks, whom the 49ers released on Aug. 25.

Green Bay opens the season at home on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
