Do the 49ers need a veteran backup quarterback behind Alex Smith? Coach Jim Harbaugh has declined comment on whether 49ers have any interest in free-agent David Garrard, whom the Jacksonville Jaguars released last week.

Harbaugh placed a high draft grade on Garrard in 2002, a source told CSNBayArea.com in January at the time the 49ers hired Harbaugh as head coach. Harbaugh wrote draft reports on draft-eligible quarterbacks as an assistant with the Raiders in 2002 and '03.Garrard's agent, Al Irby, said he has been asked by NFL teams to refrain from disclosing which organizations have shown interest in his client. So here's an update Wednesday morning on Garrard's status:"This is a day-to-day process," Irby said. "Things are changing every day. Again, both sides must feel comfortable with each other, short term and long term. There is new interest almost every day. Teams are wanting to know what's going on, and what is David looking for. David is evaluating each team's situation. He is taking his time."
