Staley does not seek trade to contender; ‘I've always wanted to play for…'

SANTA CLARA – Left tackle Joe Staley left no room for interpretation about his preference as the NFL trade deadline approaches.

Staley, an 11-year veteran and five-time Pro Bowl selection, has no desire to jump to leave the 49ers in order to jump to a contender, he said.

“I’ve always wanted to play for the Niners, and that’s not going to change now,” Staley said.

“They know I want to be here and I have to do my job on the field. My only concern is coming off a game when we didn’t do a good job in pass protection, we have another challenge this week against the Eagles. My challenge is to do better in that respect.”

The 49ers have received no trade offers for Staley or anyone else, according to a source. The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday.

The Philadelphia Eagles will play their first game Sunday without veteran left tackle Jason Peters, who is out for the season with a knee injury. The Eagles will get a chance to watch Staley, as well as evaluate their own offensive line.

Coach Kyle Shanahan this week made it be known that any team that wants to engage the 49ers in trade talks for Staley better be ready to make a hefty offer. Staley is signed through the 2019 season.

“Joe’s a guy that I definitely want here, definitely not a guy I want to lose, by any means,” Shanahan said.

“But to lose a guy like Joe Staley, that wouldn’t be something I’d be excited about. So it would have to take a whole lot.”
