Would 49ers' bye week be wasted if Saints lose?

Share

This question came in during the second quarter Saturday evening, and I'm answering it with the Detroit Lions holding a 14-7 lead over the New Orleans Saints.Q: So if Saints lose, will the Niners be OK after spending all that time on them & not on NYGATL? (@FranchiseG)

The 49ers prepared for all three of their possible divisional-round opponents during their bye week. They did, however, spend more time getting ready to face the Saints next Saturday at Candlestick Park. But I also know the 49ers coaches also did their prep work on the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants. So if Detroit beats the Saints, the 49ers will narrow their focus to two teams. The 49ers will not be in any kind of disadvantage either way.The coaching staff is at the 49ers' Santa Clara office Saturday night. They are watching the Lions-Saints game closely. And if the Detroit wins, the 49ers can rip up all their advance work on the Saints and focus on the Falcons and Giants. The 49ers did no on-field work to prepare for the Saints. What we're talking about is film study. During their practices Thursday and Friday, the 49ers returned to training-camp mode. The 49ers offense worked against the 49ers defense. They did not prepare for a specific opponent.Once the 49ers players report to work on Monday, that's when they will be greeted by the game plan on the upcoming opponent.
