A's designate Powell, Miller for assignment

Catcher Landon Powell and outfielder Jai Miller have been designated for assignment, the team announced Friday.

It's an interesting move when you consider the A's already signed Powell to a one-year, 620K, arbitration-avoiding deal for 2012. He earned 420K last season.

"Not fun to find out two days before Christmas," Powell was quoted saying. The report indicates Powell would prefer it if the A's would trade him or if another team picks him up.

It's no surprise Powell is upset; the A's traded two of his top battery-mates -- Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill -- for prospects this offseason. Then they let Powell know he didn't have a spot on the 40-man roster two days before Christmas.

What the A's will do with that 40-man roster spot has not yet been revealed, but the A's just acquired catching prospect Derek Norris from the Nationals, and they could be making space for him.

Powell, 29, hit .171 in 36 games for the A's last season. He hit one home run, a deep blast at the Coliseum off the Giants' Jeremy Affeldt in part of Oakland's three-game sweep of the cross-town rivals.

Miller went 3-for-12 with a home run and two RBI in seven games with the A's during September last season.

The 26-year old spent the majority of 2011 with the Sacramento River Cats where he batted .276 with 32 home runs and 88 RBI in 110 games.
