A's reinstate McCarthy, place Sogard on DL

The A's have officially reinstated starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy from the disabled list. To make room on the roster they placed infielder Eric Sogard on the 15-day DL with a strain in his back. McCarthy has been placed on the DL twice this season missing 55 games. His most recent trip to the DL cost him eight starts. It seems the only cure for the tall righty's shoulder is rest. The A's hope they have given him enough time off to last the rest of the season.

Sogard was recalled from Sacramento on July 20. He hit .212 (7 for 33) in 15 games since rejoining the A's. He has had three different stints with Oakland this season. In his 37 games with the A's, Sogard is hitting .167 with two homers and seven RBIs. In 36 games in Sacramento he is hitting .323 with five homers and 22 RBIs.
