Cal's Esquer named National Coach of the Year

Cal baseball coach David Esquer was named NCAA National Coach of the Year after leading the Bears from the brink of program elimination to the College World Series.

Cal is 353-312-2 in Esquer's 12 years with Cal. Cal entered Tuesday's game with Texas A&M with a 37-22 mark.

The Bears are in a losers'-bracket game starting at 11 a.m. Cal has a 2-2 all-time record versus Texas A&M, last defeating the Aggies, 11-4, in the 1992 NCAA Gainesville (Fla.) Regional final.

Cal qualified for the College World Series for the first time since 1992 after sweeping Dallas Baptist in the Santa Clara Super Regional.
