SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants closer Brian Wilson, on the 15-day DL with elbow inflammation, threw for six minutes on flat ground Thursday, the first step in his rehabilitation.

Wilson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, retroactive to Aug. 16. He sustained the injury during the Aug. 15 game with the Atlanta Braves. Wilson allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth in that outing and the Giants fell 5-4.

Manager Bruce Bochy told reporters after the light-throwing session that he is not optimistic that Wilson will return from the DL when his 15-day stint is up.

The next step for the All-Star closer is to see how his arm responds to Thursday's test.

Wilson has recorded 35 saves in 40 chances this season with a 3.19 ERA. He has appeared in 55 of San Francisco's 130 games.
