The Giants are extremely close to closing a deal for Mets slugger Carlos Beltran, according to a handful of media reports.

Yahoo! Sports and Sports Illustrated first reported the trade.

The framework of the deal, while not official, is in place. According to a source that spoke to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, the Giants will send top pitching prospect Zack Wheeler to New York.

The 6-foot-3 Wheeler, 21, is in his second season of minor league ball. The 6th overall pick in 2009 is 7-5 this season with a 3.99 earned run average for the Class A San Jose Giants.

Additionally, a New York-based Major League source confirmed to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area that the deal is "all but done."

However, due to Beltran's no-trade clause and the 105 rule (10 years in the majors, five consecutive years with the same team), the trade cannot be completed for 24 hours.

Beltran is hitting .289, with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs. Beltran is making 18.5 million in the final year of a seven-year, 119 million contract.

In 87 career at-bats at AT&T Park, Beltran has hit .310 with no home runs, two triples and eight RBIs.

According to the New York Times, Beltran may have known a trade was imminent because he went out to dinner with a number of teammates after the Mets' win over the Reds on Tuesday night.

The last time Beltran was traded, at the deadline in 2004, he went from Kansas City to Houston.

Major League Baseball's trade deadline is 1 p.m. PT Sunday.
