SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants lefty Barry Zito is headed to the disabled list for only the second time in his career.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy announced that Jonathan Sanchez would be replacing Zito in the rotation and starting Friday night against the Phillies, forcing the club to make a decision on Zito.

Giants GM Brian Sabean told Comcast SportsNet Bay Area before Monday's game with Arizona that Zito has a problem with the same foot that placed him on the DL earlier this year.

The team's official word is that Zito is suffering from a right foot strain.

Zito, 33, has lost his last three decisions.
