Former Giants prospect Wheeler could reach majors soon

One part of the Beltran-Wheeler deal is tearing up themajors. The other half could be making his Major League debut sooner thanexpected.Zack Wheeler, the former Giants prospect who was dealt tothe Mets in exchange for Carlos Beltran, could get a call-up to the majors thisseason.Wheeler was not expected to make his debut until 2013, butMets manager Terry Collins told the Wall Street Journals Brian Costa the22-year-old right-hander is not out of the mix for a call-up this season.Wheeler has posted a 2.62 ERA with Double-A Binghamton thisseason with an 8-4 record and a .204 opponents batting average. He tossedseven and one-third innings of one-run ball in a July 5 game against theRichmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the Giants.Wheeler has dominated hitters this season, collecting 88strikeouts in 92 and two-third innings with just 35 walks. He was selected tothe MLB Futures Game and the Eastern League All-Star Game.Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has not yet saidanything regarding plans for Wheelers future and may opt to protect hispromising young arm by keeping Wheeler in the minors until next year.The Giants selected Wheeler in the first round of the 2009MLB First-Year Player Draft. Baseball America ranked him the 10th bestprospect in its midseason list on July 5.
