MILWAUKEE -- With a bullpen in need of another contributor, the Giants are taking a flyer on a huge arm.
They acquired right-hander Sam Dyson from the Texas Rangers on Tuesday in exchange for cash considerations and a player to be named later. The Giants also received undisclosed cash considerations from the Rangers, who designated Dyson for assignment after a brutal start to the season.
Dyson has closing experience and a fastball that approaches 100 mph, but he had a 10.80 ERA before being let go. The 29-year-old was 1-6 in 17 relief appearances for the Rangers, with 20 earned runs allowed in 16 2/3 innings and a 2.58 WHIP.

If the Giants can get Dyson right, they'll have a weapon at the back end of their bullpen. He had a 2.44 ERA in 70 1/3 innings in 2016, with 38 saves. Prior to that, Dyson put up strong numbers in Miami.
Over parts of two seasons for the Rangers, Dyson had a 2.04 ERA in 104 appearances. He saved 40 of 45 chances. That all went backwards this season, but he should benefit from a change of scenery after his start to this season, and a move to a far more forgiving ballpark.
