Giants evacuated from Scottsdale Stadium

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Giants are beginning their 2012 season with a running start. Literally.

Players, coaches and staff were evacuated from Scottsdale Stadium just after 9 a.m. Saturday when a gas leak was detected. Manager Bruce Bochy hustled into the clubhouse and waved his arms, saying, "Everyone, we've all got to get out of here."

Players initially went to the field before stadium operations staff told them they had to go to the parking lot, where everyone milled about for five minutes or so. Firefighters issued an all-clear to Alfie Felder, the Giants' director of spring training operations, who passed on word to Bochy and GM Brian Sabean.

The leak was detected and the stadium was declared safe. Gates are expected to open as normal in advance of today's Cactus League opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
