The Giants have signed catcher Eli Whiteside to a one-year, major-league contract, CSNBayArea.com has confirmed.

This news comes a day after reports surfaced that Whiteside would be brought back on a minor-league contract.

REPORT: Giants re-sign Whiteside to minor-league contract

The Giants non-tendered Whiteside earlier this week, making him a free agent.

Whiteside, 32, backed into a heavy workload after Buster Posey's season-ending injury. The replacement catcher hit .197 with four home runs in a career-high 236 plate appearances.

Bruce Bochy is notorious for shuffling his lineups, and he will have his options at the backstop position as the Giants are currently carrying four catchers -- Posey, Whiteside, Chris Stewart and Hector Sanchez.
