Posey happy with rehab, not 100 healthy

SAN FRANCISCO -- Buster Posey said that he is happy with his rehab progress so far, but acknowledged that his ankle isn't fully healed yet.

"It's not 100 percent yet," Posey said Friday at the Giants' media day.
After sustaining a season-ending injury last May, Posey is on a strict rehab program in hopes of being ready to be the Giants starting catcher on Opening Day.

The games will be a whole new level and Im excited to see how my ankle responds, Posey said Friday. I think it will respond well but its a long season, whether youre 100 percent healthy or notIm happy with where I am and Im optimistic for having a good, healthy season.Posey helped the Giants win a World Series title in 2010 and won the Rookie of the Year award after batting .305 with 18 home runs and 67 RBIs in 108 regular-season games. He was hitting .284 with four home runs in 45 games before his injury last season.Posey may see time at first base if the rigors of catching regularly take a toll on his ankle. However, the Giants first-round draft pick in 2008 expects to remain a catcher primarily and said that being in the crouch isnt bothering his ankle. The ankle feels good in the crouch, Posey said. I think everything Ive done so far functionally, from workouts to running, everything has felt really good.Posey was expected to be a cornerstone of the Giants offense during their 2011 title defense season. However, his injury left San Francisco struggling to put runs on the board. Weve got to be better offensively, Posey said. We did that as a unit in 2010. There wasnt really one person that hit 40 home runs so its just going to be a matter of uswe know how good our pitching staff isjust going up and putting good at bats together and just battling the whole game.In his first extensive interview of 2012, Posey predominantly faced questions about the status of his ankle. When asked if hes looking forward to fielding questions about his on-field performance instead, Posey was quick to answer:Yeah, thatll be nice. I know that itll be questions answered for awhile but hopefully I can answer the questions best by being out there everyday and playing and I think that will resolve some of the questions surrounding it.
