Report: Contract talks stall with Cain, Giants

Contract discussions between the Giants and pitcher Matt Cain have reportedly reached an impasse following the latest round of negotiations.

According to FoxSports.com, Cain's representatives and team officials met Wednesday and were unable to make progress toward a deal. The story cited major league sources and indicated that no new talks were planned.

If Cain does not agree to a deal with San Francisco, he becomes a free agent at the end of the 2012 season. Cain has a career record of 69-73 but has gone 39-30 with a 2.97 ERA over the past three seasons.

He struck out four Indians in 3 23 innings Wednesday but also permitted two runs on five hits and a walk.

Afterward, when asked about his contract situation, Cain was tight-lipped.

No updates, Cain said. Good try though.
