The Giants need power to their lineup more than anything. Their first step in doing so was trading for third baseman Evan Longoria.
On the free agent market, the team is looking at right fielder Jay Bruce. And they have reportedly taken the next step.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, the Giants have formally reached out to Bruce.

While a deal is not close yet, Nightengale reports that both the Giants and Bruce's camp realize the two would be a perfect match. On Wednesday, Bruce's agent made it clear how Bruce feels about the Giants.
"I think if Jay ends up in San Francisco he'd be thrilled," said Matt Sosnick.
Bruce, who turns 31 in April, hit .254 with 36 home runs in 2017 between the Mets and Indians. If the Giants sign Bruce, the team would add 56 home runs from last season to their lineup between Longoria and the slugging lefty.
