Report: Giants, Lincecum 4M apart in contract talks

The Giants and their star pitcher Tim Lincecum are 4 million dollars apart in their contract negotiations, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

The report indicates the Giants offered Lincecum a two-year, 40-million deal, and that Lincecum's representatives countered with a two-year, 44-million offer.

In terms of big baseball contracts, the 4 million discrepancy actually leaves the two sides relatively close to reconciling the difference.

On Tuesday, CSNBayArea.com reported that vice president of baseball operations Bobby Evans was confident that the team would reach a new contract agreement with Lincecum and avoid arbitration.

NEWS: Evans optimistic Giants, Lincecum can avoid arbitration
After two Cy Young Awards and a World Series Championship in his first four MLB seasons, Lincecum is coming off what could be considered a down year for him. He went 13-14 with a 2.74 ERA and 220 strikeouts.

Lincecum, 27, is coming off a two-year, 23-million contract that expired after the 2011 season, and the Giants would like to reach a new agreement to avoid a potentially record-breaking arbitration hearing.
