Sanchez ramps up throwing to prepare for return

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Freddy Sanchez ramped up his throwingprogram, including testing his arm on simulated double plays, Monday in preparation for his return to defensive duties.The Giants second baseman has been limited to being manager Bruce Bochy's designated hitter so far in the Cactus League. Bochy hopes tohave Sanchez ready for game action by the middle of the week.

Sanchez was performing infield drills early Monday at Scottsdale Stadium beforethe team headed to Surprise for a game against the Kansas City Royals. Sanchezwas initially using limited effort on his throws, but started to exert himself more as the ground balls kept coming.

Eventually, Sanchez started practicing flip throws to second base to simulateturning a double play. Soon after, he switched roles and fielded underhandscoops from Brandon Crawford, then completed the relay throw to first base.Sanchez is currently in action as the Giants designated hitter against theRoyals so check back later for how he did at the plate and the latest on whenBochy plans to pencil him in at second base for the first time this spring.
