San Jose SaberCats quarterback Mark Grieb earned the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week honor for his performance in San Joses 71-70 overtime win over the Arizona Rattlers.
Grieb, the all-time leading passer in SaberCats franchise history, threw for 432 yards completing 34-59 passes with nine touchdowns and no interceptions. This marked the fifth time in Griebs illustrious career that he has eclipsed the 400-yard mark in a game, with the last coming in a win on July 1, 2011 against the defending ArenaBowl Champion Jacksonville Sharks. That was also the last time that Grieb was named Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week, as he threw for 401 yards and had ten total touchdowns (nine through the air and one on the ground).
The San Jose native spread the ball around to six different receivers on Saturday, five of which caught touchdowns. Two receivers (Ben Nelson and James Roe) went over the century mark, and each had three scores apiece. Roe also passed a significant career milestone with his second touchdown on the night, which was the 250th of his career. In addition, newly acquired wide receiver Huey Whittaker had 94 yards receiving, and his touchdown in the fourth quarter marked the 100th of his AFL career.
