Headed to Indiana, Collison reflects on time with Kings: ‘I gave it my all'

SACRAMENTO -- Almost three days into free agency and the Sacramento Kings have yet to hear a single yes. They’ve flirted with some of the biggest names on the market, but their estimated $45 million in cap space remains intact.

That hasn’t stopped Sacramento’s own free agents from finding new homes. On opening day of free agency, Langston Galloway agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Detroit Pistons. Ben McLemore followed him out the door on Sunday, agreeing to a two-year, $10.7 million pact with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Monday afternoon, it was starting point guard Darren Collison’s turn to walk out the door, joining the Indiana Pacers on a reported two-year, $20 million contract.

“Sac fans are truly the best,” Collison told NBC Sports California when reached for comment. “I’m humbled to be a part of such a great fanbase. Night in and night out, I gave it my all regardless of what the team was going through. Sacramento will be called home due to the love and support I’ve received. Thank you.”

Collison, 29,  spent the last three season in a Kings uniform, posting 14.2 points, 4.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 187 games, including 124 starts for Sacramento. He was open to a return, but with rookies De’Aaron Fox and Frank Mason III in tow, Collison saw the writing on the wall.

This is the second tour of duty in Indiana for Collison. The eight-year NBA veteran spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 season in a Pacers uniform before being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in the summer of 2012.

Sacramento has plenty of remaining free agents, most of which are not expected back. Rudy Gay has been mentioned plenty over the last few days, but has yet to find a landing spot. Ty Lawson, Tyreke Evans, Aaron Afflalo and Anthony Tolliver remain unsigned as well.
