The Kings exercised the option on Keith Smart's contract for the 2012-2013 season, the team announced today.
Smart began the season as an assistant to head coach Paul Westphal, who was fired after the Kings started the season 2-5.
Hours after Smart was appointed, the Kings overcame a 21-point deficit and defeated the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 5.

Keith has done a terrific job of taking control of the direction of the team, explained President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie. He is active, engaged and working hard to develop our young players along with a complimentary style of play.
Smart's first NBA head-coaching experience came in 2002-2003, where he went 9-31 as the interim coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
He then joined the Warriors' staff, where he served as an assistant for seven seasons before taking over for Don Nelson following the 2009-2010 season.
The Warriors went 36-46 last year under Smart, who was not retained by new Warriors owner Joe Lacob.

As a junior guard on Bob Knight's 1986-1987 Indiana Hoosiers squad, Smart made the game-winning basket against Syracuse to win the national championship.
He was named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
