JOHNS CREEK, Ga. (AP)Steve Stricker has tied the record for the lowest score in one of golfs major championships.

The 44-year-old American opened with a 7-under 63 Thursday to equal a mark thats been done 10 previous times in the PGA. Its been done a total of 14 times in the other three majors.

Stricker had a 10-foot putt to become the first player ever to shoot 62 at a major championship, but it slid by the right side of the cup. Stricker tapped in to maintain a two-stroke lead over Jerry Kelly, who still has two holes to play.

Tiger Woods is at the other end of the spectrum. He started with a 77 for his worst score ever in the PGA Championship.
