SAN FRANCISCO -- Giants head trainer Dave Groeschner spoke to the media about the extent of Buster Posey's injury after the team's 1-0 loss to the Florida Marlins.Posey had three MRIs performed on his ankle, lower leg and knee. His knee appears to be fine, but Posey sustained a fractured left fibula and three torn ligaments in his ankle. Groeschner says Posey's torn ligaments are the most serious injury and will most likely require surgery.SLIDESHOW: Scott Cousins vs. Buster PoseyGroeschner did not rule out that Posey could catch again, noting "he has age on his side... he's a great athlete".Giants skipper Bruce Bochy says based on what he's been briefed on regarding Posey's MRI, he thinks Posey will be back this season. Regardless of the timetable, the absence of the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year leaves a gaping hole in the lineup.
"You just don't replace a Buster Posey," Bochy said. "He's not only your catcher handling a great staff, but he's also your cleanup hitter. Hopefully the other guys will step up. Right now we're not doing what we are capable of doing offensively, and they need to turn up the volume on their play."
The Giants and Posey will get more opinions, but the surgery could be as soon as this weekend.
