Biar's Top-Three Cardinals-Raiders Matchups
In search of their first win of the season, the Raiders host the NFC West-leading Cardinals and their former quarterback Carson Palmer on Sunday at 1:25 p.m. PST.
Matchup No. 3: Jared Veldheer vs. LaMarr Woodley
The Raiders rotate edge rushers quite often these days, so several players will take a crack at Veldheer, but LaMarr Woodley will go against him often in the base defense.Khalil Mack will also spend some time against Veldheer, but Woodley in particular needs to increase his production over recent weeks.
Matchup No. 2: Patrick Peterson vs. Andre Holmes
Holmes will often be matched up with Peterson, a physical cornerback who can shut receivers down. Derek Carr has shown a willingness to throw at such corners, so Holmes should expect some targets when he and Peterson lock horns. The Cardinals’ high-priced cover man has struggled some this early season, but he’s still a difficult matchup now highly motivated. If Holmes can succeed in that environment, he can play well against most anyone.
Matchup No. 1: Carson Palmer vs. Khalil Mack
The Raiders would certainly like to bring former Raider and current Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer down regularly and make big plays on defense. That may be tough against the Cardinals offensive line. According to Pro Football Focus, Palmer has been sacked three times, 9.1 percent of his 87 dropbacks.
