McKenzie not considering Aldon Smith's status heading into NFL draft

ALAMEDA – Aldon Smith has been banished from the NFL roughly 17 months now as a repeat offender of the league’s substance abuse policy. There’s no telling when he’ll be reinstated despite an application asking for a status change last October.

Smith has had two run-ins with the law since then. San Francisco police questioned him regarding a domestic incident in February. Smith was a passenger in a vehicle that hit an unmarked police car San Francisco the following month where the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He was detained briefly by police and seemed out of sorts during an on-camera interview after being released.

That leaves Smith out of the Raiders’ current plans. Smith is under contract another season with the Raiders and would add edge-rushing depth if reinstated – the NFL has made no move to reopen his case – but general manager Reggie McKenzie isn’t considering that prospect heading into next week’s NFL draft.

“Our thought process is on the draft and not considering Aldon at this point,” McKenzie said Friday in a pre-draft press conference. “He’s still on the suspension list, so we’re not considering him at this point.”
