Raiders place Chekwa on IR, sign McCann

ALAMEDA -- The promising rookie season of cornerback Chimdi Chekwa came to an end Thursday as the Raiders placed the fourth-round draft pick from Ohio State on Injured Reserve with his balky hamstring.In a corresponding move, Oakland signed former Dallas and Baltimore cornerback Bryan McCann, who was among five defensive free agents to work out at the Raiders compound on Monday.McCann, who played collegiately at SMU, played in nine games with the Cowboys in 2010 and returned both an interception (101 yards) and a punt (97 yards) for a touchdown in consecutive weeks, against the New York Giants and Detroit Lions, respectively. He appeared in two more games with Dallas this season before being released Sept. 20. He signed with the Ravens and was waived on Nov. 5.

Chekwa, meanwhile, has been battling injuries throughout. On the first day of hitting in training camp, Chekwa dislocated a shoulder in a warm-up drill.He played in the Raiders' first four games and started against New England before injuring himself. Chekwa was inactive the next four weeks and while he was active against San Diego last Thursday night, he did not play.
