CSNCalifornia.comPractice No. 21Summary: On their second-to-last practice in Napa -- Oakland breaks camp following an early practice on Friday after an off-day Thursday -- the Raiders went at it in a physical workout in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in front of another crowd of VIP fans. Having lost linebacker Travis Goethel to a potential season-ending injury on Monday, the Raiders emphasized plays in the flat and underneath to test out the linebackers currently on the roster.NEWS: Raiders LB Goethel tears knee, out for season
They also worked on finding a gunner and a punt returner. Recently-drafted quarterback Terrelle Pryor is still a no-show, lending credence to the notion that the Raiders would rather have him arrive when they are back in the relative solitude of their Alameda complex.
Still, head coach Hue Jackson said that's not necessarily the case. "We're not hiding him, I guarantee you that," Jackson said. "He's ours. There's some protocol we have to follow to make sure that we do everything the right way before we get him here. Once he's here, you guys will have access to him." So we've got that going for us, which is nice.Injury report: Defensive tackle Richard Seymour and middle linebacker Rolando McClain were given the day of by Jackson, meaning 18 players sat out practice with various "nicks," including receivers Louis Murphy (hamstringgroin), Chaz Schilens (sprained right knee), Shawn Bayes and Steve Goulet, tight ends Kevin Boss (left knee sprain) and David Ausberry, fullback James McCluskey, offensive linemen Lou Eliades, Alan Pelc and Roy Schuening, linebacker Travis Goethel (knee) defensive backs Hiram Eugene (dislocated left hip), Chris Johnson (oil change, yes, he said oil change), Mike Mitchell (left knee) and Zac Etheridge (knee) and defensive tackle John Henderson. Offensive play of the day: It happened so fast it looked like a hybrid of a swing pass and a slant. Except Jason Campbell's dart of a pass to Taiwan Jones went to the left sideline and Jones, catching the ball in full stride and near full speed blew by linebacker Bruce Davis as he scampered up field. A smiling coach Hue Jackson could barely contain his smile as Jones jogged back to the huddle.Defensive play of the day: Often a target for scrutiny, cornerback Stanford Routt read Jacoby Ford's dig pattern perfectly and undercut the speedy if diminutive Ford and jumped the route. He could have picked off Jason Campbell's pass easily but let the ball go through so Ford could get the feel of making the catch. Routt was on scout-team defense at the time so it was important for the first-team offense to experience some success.Special teams play of the day: Sebastian Janikowski, owner of the strongest leg in the NFL, drilled a 64-yard field goal on the penultimate play of practice, clearing the crossbar with ease. The NFL record is 63 yards, shared by New Orleans' Tom Dempsey, who did it on Nov. 8, 1970 against Detroit, and Denver's Jason Elam, who did it on Oct. 25, 1998 against Jacksonville. On the final play of practice, SeaBass moved back five yards to attempt a 69-yarder. His kick came up just short and a tad wide right.Eye on reps: While Nick Miller is the returning "starting" punt returner, he is being joined in fielding punts by Jacoby Ford and rookies Denarius Moore and Taiwan Jones. Meanwhile, Trevor Scott, practicing this week for the first time since suffering a season-ending injury to his left knee last Nov. 21 in Pittsburgh, is lining up exclusively at right defensive end. Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa is also seeing time at safety.Personnel report: Terrelle Pryor is obviously not signed yet so he is still a no-show, but room may have been made for the former Ohio State quarterback to have No. 6 as Derek Hagan switched to No. 80. Also, any hope Raiders fans may have had at Oakland re-signing former middle linebacker Kirk Morrison fizzled when the free agent signed with Buffalo Wednesday afternoon.Quotable: "We're in training camp, and you shouldn't even be playing video games. You've got o get your study time in. This is my job, this is my profession and it's something I love to do. I try to stick to what I do best and that's playing football." - Receiver Derek Hagan, on why he shies away from playing Xbox in camp.Next practice: Friday, 11 a.m.
