MEXICO CITY – The Raiders defense played a ton of snaps on Monday night against Houston in Mexico City’s extreme elevation.
Dealing with altitude – Mexico City sits 7,328 feet above sea level – was going to be a challenge for both squads, and time of possession would be key in keeping players fresh.
The Raiders lost that battle. They had the ball 13 minutes less than the Texans and took 23 fewer snaps. The Texans were able to covert half their third downs, and held the Raiders run game at bay and controlled the tempo most of the way.
The Raiders, as they’re known to do, took over in the fourth quarter and emerged with a 27-20 victory at Estadio Azteca.
Derek Carr threw two touchdown passes to tie the game and then take the lead, but the offense was allowed to come back thanks to a solid defensive effort down the stretch.
The Raiders only gave up a field goal in the final period while dealing with thin air. Reggie Nelson played all 73 defensive snaps, and edge rushers Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin played 73 and 69 snaps, respectively.
The Raiders believe they dealt with high altitude and prepped well for adverse conditions.
“You talk about the elements and the altitude, you could feel it when you first flew in that it was going to be different, it was going to be different than Oakland,” Mack said. “But we adjusted to it and handled it well.”
