Report: Raiders after Tarver for D.C.

The Raiders are reportedly "considering" hiring Stanford co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Jason Tarver as new coach Dennis Allen's defensive coordinator.ESPN reported the interest, and there have been rumblings that Tarver has already accepted the job, though a source at Stanford could not corroborate the report. The Raiders have also not made any comment.Tarver, 37, and a Phi Beta Kappa, has a B.S. degree in chemistry, a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and twice received the departmental prize for distinguished teaching at UCLA. Football-wise, he just finished his first season at Stanford after 10 years with the 49ers as an offensive quality control assistant, an assistant running backs coach, offensive assistant and outside linebackers coach. He was the Cardinal's co-D.C. with Derek Mason, though Mason called the plays. While not exactly an after-thought, the Raiders' defensive coordinator position is thought to be somewhat ceremonial as Allen is a defensive-minded coach having served as Denver's D.C. last season. Still, Allen said he did not believe a head coach could be effective as a head coach if he is calling plays.Since being introduced on Monday, Allen has seemingly been rebuffed in his attempts to hire a defensive coordinator. The Raiders have reportedly been denied permission by Denver and New Orleans to interview Broncos linebackers coach Richard Smith and Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson.Another purported candidate with a relationship to Allen, Kansas City defensive backs coach Emmitt Thomas, decided to stay with the Chiefs and former 49ers and San Diego defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, who reportedly interviewed with the Raiders, was hired this week by Indianapolis.Other names linked to the Raiders and Allen are 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell, who has been a defensive coordinator in Green Bay (2000-03) and Atlanta (2004-2006), and Green Bay cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr.
