If you caught the first episode of HBOs popular 247 last night, you saw that one of the biggest story lines was wildly talented Flyers center Claude Giroux suffering a concussion. Giroux is not only the Flyers best player, but an early candidate for the Hart Trophy as league MVP.
Giroux joined a number of top NHL talents to suffer a concussion this season, including his teammate, Chris Pronger. In fact, 23 players in all have missed time this season due to head injuries.
The Globe and Mails Roy McGregor points out in todays edition that you could put together a virtual NHL All-Star team with players that are currently sidelined with concussions. Giroux, Pronger, Sidney Crosby, Mike Richards, Jeff Skinner and former Shark Milan Michalek are among them.
It matters not how concussions are happening head shots, fights, accidents with sticks and pucks, running into ones own teammate they have become an increasingly polarizing issue in todays hockey. There are as many sick of the issue as there are those wanting the issue addressed even the media has started sniping among themselves with the only sure truth being that concussions arent going to go away even if they cease to be mentioned. They are, sadly, increasing or, at the very least, the recording of them has.
