Doan to miss Sharks-Coyotes game

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan was suspended by the NHL on Wednesday after elbowing Dallas forward Jamie Benn in the head on Tuesday.

File this one under the well take any good news we can get category, if youre the San Jose Sharks, as Doan will miss the pivotal matchup between the two clubs on Saturday.

The emotional leader of the Coyotes, Doan is the teams third leading scorer with 47 points (21g, 26a). Hell forfeit more than 166,000 in salary.

In a statement issued by the team, Doan said: "I accept the NHL's decision and ruling. I am thankful that Jamie Benn was not hurt on the play. I recognize how bad it looked but there was no intent to injure him. Jamie Benn is a class act and I appreciate how he handled everything. I apologize to the NHL, my teammates and our fans for missing the next 3 games as we continue to fight for a playoff spot."

The Coyotes are in ninth place in the Western Conference headed into Thursday night with 84 points, two more than San Jose. The Sharks have one game in hand.
