Drew Remenda wanted to see Thornton, Marleau ‘raise that cup'

EDMONTON – Oilers broadcaster Drew Remenda feels pretty fortunate that he’s getting to watch superstar Connor McDavid develop into one of the league’s most dominant players.

McDavid, still just 19 years old, leads the NHL with 48 points and is unlike anyone Remenda has ever seen before with his ability to skate and make plays. As a former Sharks coach and broadcaster, Remenda remembers one former Shark that possessed a ton of speed – Jeff Friesen – that “could fly,” but he was “nothing compared to [McDavid],” Remenda said in the latest Sharks Insider Podcast.

Remenda, of course, needs no introduction among Sharks fans, as he was part of the broadcast team for so many seasons. He followed San Jose’s run to the Stanley Cup Final last year, but at the end of the day, “the better team won” in the Pittsburgh Penguins, in his mind.

“It was disappointing to see," Remenda said. "But the boys and I were still cheering for the Sharks. We wanted to see Joe raise that cup and Patty raise that cup.”

Going forward, Remenda feels the Sharks are still a legitimate contender.

“If anybody is poised to make that return trip [to the Final]," it’s the Sharks, he said.

Remenda touches on a number of subjects in the latest podcast, including the brand new Rogers Place, in its first season as home to the Oilers; the growing rivalry between Edmonton and San Jose; Brent Burns’ transition into one of the NHL’s most dangerous weapons; and the Sharks’ captaincy change from Joe Thornton to Joe Pavelski.
