Kevin McHale explains why close games are good for Warriors

While the Warriors have racked up their fair share of blowout wins this season, their last three wins have all been by less than 10 points.

According to Hall of Famer and former T'Wolves and Rockets coach Kevin McHale, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The current TNT analyst explains his reason on the Mike and Mike Show on ESPN on Wednesday morning.

"They are not blowing you out like they were last year all the time. But this year, they are just beating you. And they are playing a lot of close games. I think that's good for them. I think playing in close games makes you more comfortable with that. Winning by 30 every night, you remember last year how many games Steph Curry didn't even play in the fourth quarter. I just think that helps you, I really do," McHale said.

McHale also offered his thoughts on the addition of four-time scoring champ Kevin Durant.

"I like when they made the deal. You bring in Kevin Durant, I said, when you add a quality player and person like Kevin Durant to your team, I don't care who you are, any one of the 30 teams improves when you add him," McHale said.

The seven-time All-Star compared this year's squad to the 73-win team from a year ago and commented on the Warriors' 115-98 win over the Clippers on Dec. 7 in Los Angeles.

"They're not playing at the same level they did last year. Nobody could. I would have lost everything I own if you had told me 'I'll bet you the Golden State Warriors would win 73 games.' There's no way. They were on an unbelievable run last year at this time. This year, they are closing games out. They have games when they are full on and they are running right through you. They went at the Clippers and I was like 'Wow.' It wasn't even a game. It looked like a JV versus a Varsity team the way they played that night," McHale said.

McHale also raved about Klay Thompson scoring 60 points in 29 minutes against the Pacers on Dec. 5.

"They are not quite clicking on all cylinders. I don't know if their defense is quite as good as it was last year, but what they have at the end of games, you have Curry who makes tough shots and big shot maker late. You got Klay Thompson, one of the best catch and shoot guys. His 40-point half and 60 points in 29 minutes was amazing. That was amazing. And then you've got Kevin Durant, who is a great closer, who makes big shots late. And Draymond Green, who last night makes the big defensive play on Anthony Davis, steals the ball from him," McHale said.
