Warriors first half report cards: Only one solid 'A'
Dishing out the grades...
The halfway point of the NBA season has arrived for the Warriors, and at 35-6, they own the best record in the NBA. Having studied video and statistics, we submit our First Half Report Card.
What we strongly consider: previous standards, injuries and overall impact.
What we somewhat consider: intangibles, specifics on offense and defense.
What we mostly ignore: age and future projection.
We grade on a curve, allowing for more latitude as we go down the bench.
Here, in alphabetical order, are the first-half grades for the 2016-17 season:
Pertinent stats (per game): 7.1 points (50.2 percent field goals, 42.4 percent 3-pointers, 73.7 percent free throws), 1.1 assists, 1.4 rebounds. PER: 15.68.
Eye Test: Confidence continues to grow and he has become a reliable offensive weapon off the bench. Teams that ignore him do so at the risk of being punished.
Pertinent stats: 24.6 points (46.5 percent FG, 39.8 3p, 92.5 percent FT), 6.0 assists, 4.2 rebounds, 1.8 steals. PER: 24.6.
Eye Test: Accuracy is down, but his aggressiveness is up and he’s starting to look more like the player we’ve seen the past two seasons. Still operating at All-Star level.
Pertinent stats: 25.8 points (53.7 percent FG, 39.4 3p, 86.3 FT), 8.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.7 blocks, 1.1 steals. PER: 27.46
Eye Test: Putting up career numbers almost across the board on offense and playing the best defense of the year. Has been the most efficient player on the team and the first-half MVP.
Pertinent stats: 10.7 points (44.9 percent FG, 32.3 3p, 68.5 FT), 8.6 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.3 blocks. PER: 18.24.
Eye Test: Scoring is down (as expected) and 3-point shot has been erratic. Still, the ultimate teammate providing whatever is needed, and often more, on a given night.
Pertinent stats: 5.9 points (48.2 percent FG, 34.5 3p, 60.6 FT), 3.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds. PER: 11.84.
Eye Test: Started slowly but is picking up his game in recent weeks. May have lost a step but often regains it with anticipation. Still an impact player when he’s on.
Pertinent stats: Rookie has played in only one game.
Eye test: Not applicable at NBA level but starting to show promise in the D-League.
Pertinent stats: 45.4 points (59.1, FG, 57.1 FT), 2.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists. PER: 10.71.
Eye test: His pattern is a lot like that of Iguodala, starting slowly but coming on strong, particularly with his shot. He’s a difference-maker once again.
Pertinent stats: 2.8 points (58.1 percent FG, 25.0 3p, 61.9 FT), 2.6 rebounds. PER: 15.81
Eye test: Had a nice start, considering what his body has endured, but has fallen off in recent weeks, losing playing time as a result. Needs to do more to play more.
James Michael McAdoo
Pertinent stats: 1.1 points (38.1 percent FG, 20.0 percent FT), 0.8 rebounds. PER: 1.78
Eye test: Plays so rarely (15 appearances in 41 games), it’s unfair to assess him.
Pertinent stats: 2.5 points (38.2 percent FG, 37.2 3p, 62.5 FT), 1.0 rebound, 0.8 assists. PER: 6.04.
Eye test: Has had a few rugged moments, notably on defense, and it seems to affect his confidence. Has added D-League some experience, which should be beneficial.
Pertinent stats: 5.4 points (65.7 percent FG, 46.9 FT) 2.5 rebounds, 0.6 blocks. PER: 22.74.
Eye test: Still bringing energy, but production is spotty and often a liability on defense. He’s here because his lob ability helps keep opponents honest on defense.
Pertinent stats: 5.0 points (52.3 percent FG, 83.1 FT), 6.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists. PER: 15.16.
Eye test: Looking more comfortable as he starts to catch up to the speed of his teammates. Shows high intellect. Has a very difficult time finishing in the paint.
Pertinent stats: 21.4 points (47.2 percent FG, 39.2 3p, 84.7 FT), 3.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists. PER: 15.99.
Eye test: Shot has been inconsistent, and not because he’s not getting enough but because he’s running hot and cold. Slowly lifting defense closer to previous levels.
Pertinent stats: 1.3 points (30.0 percent FG, 77.8 FT), 2.3 rebounds, 0.8 assists). PER: 10:46.
Eye test: Rarely plays (10 appearances) and is a regular on the inactive list. When he does play, he shows smarts and heavy legs.
Pertinent stats: 4.0 points (53.5 percent FG, 74.3 FT), 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists. PER: 16.15.
Eye test: Has improved since the early weeks, maybe after adjusting to new teammates. Makes smart passes. Still hits the midrange J. Defense comes and goes.
